Mercedes-Benz launches new truck model

ALTHOUGH the truck industry’s sales growth is set to slow down this year, it is still expected to sell 40000 units – 8% more than last year’s 37000. 059 units. This is according to Kobus van Zyl, divisional manager of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, at the company’ s launch of the new Axor 6x4 truck this week. He cautioned that this sales forecast reflected a lower growth rate than the 18% the industry had experienced since 2001. So far this year the over 3.5 ton truck segment experienced growth of about 10% – compared to the 15.43% fall in the passenger market. Van Zyl said one commercial sector keeping truck sales growth in the positive was the coal business. “We have a number of large orders, and we know the same applies to the other commercial vehicle segments. Added to this, we see demand for commercial vehicles in both the commercial sectors and the fast moving consumer goods,” he said. Positive truck sales is good news for East London, where 90% of Mercedes trucks destined for the South African market are built-up from completely knocked-down kits. Meanwhile, Jaco Steenekamp, who is the national sales manager of Volkswagen Commercial, said their sales were in line with growth being experienced in the heavy, extra-heavy and bus markets. “Year to date, 165 units have already been retailed. The total number of trucks, buses and coaches to be assembled by Mzantsi in 2008 is expected to be more than 600,” he said. This production figure is more than double the 213 Constellation trucks and 46 buses assembled at the Uitenhage manufacturing plant, which was launched in 2006. - By ROUX VAN ZYL Business Editor
